STUDENTS

Students at the Bronx Academy of Letters are held to the highest academic and behavioral standards. Our school does its part by implementing a seven-year student advisory, an extended-day program, opportunities through community partners, a mentorship program, and a college-preparation program that is central to the school’s mission. Advisory sessions act as a conduit for other youth-development strategies, providing time for advisors to introduce students to extracurricular opportunities both inside and outside the school and to provide academic support across the curriculum. The school has an active student government, a number of different clubs (drama, art, choir, magazine, newspaper, dance, chess, film), and various athletic teams (basketball, baseball, track). Students also receive assistance from the staff if they wish to start their own extracurricular groups.

The Bronx Academy of Letters also encourages experiential learning beyond the school grounds. Our students participate in special programs, internships, and service projects throughout the city. They are offered mentorship opportunities with community-based groups and individuals whose work centers on the written word. This program exposes students to professional guidance, building their self-esteem and creating work opportunities; it also helps students see that the ability to write translates into many different possible careers.
